Orlistat is a potent, specific, and long-acting inhibitor of gastrointestinal lipases. Unlike GLP-1 receptor agonists that act hormonally, Orlistat exerts its therapeutic effect within the lumen of the stomach and small intestine. It forms a covalent bond with the active serine site of gastric and pancreatic lipases, thereby inactivating these enzymes and preventing them from hydrolyzing dietary fat (triglycerides) into absorbable free fatty acids and monoglycerides.

Product Background

Because the undigested triglycerides cannot be absorbed, the body’s caloric intake from dietary fats is reduced by approximately 30%. This mechanism is independent of systemic absorption, as Orlistat remains largely confined to the gastrointestinal tract. The resulting caloric deficit facilitates weight loss; however, its efficacy is highly dependent on dietary fat consumption, and its clinical use is often accompanied by nutritional counseling to manage gastrointestinal side effects related to fat malabsorption.
